After sitting with Jessica for an hour or two, I ached for someone, anyone, to relieve me at her bedside. I don’t remember ever feeling so helpless and alone. She was unappreciative of my attempts to help her. With a grimace of pain and bewilderment on her face, she writhed about her bed, moving incessantly with no destination in mind. The first two weeks of Jessica’s PTA were my most challenging days. They are alarmed and cannot help but panic at the prospect of a grim future. For the first time, visitors can see just how far their survivor has to recover. The patient’s behavior, however, is childlike at best and, often, totally out of character. Everyone is relieved their worst fears have vanished. The patient, previously motionless, now is moving and may be speaking. The transition from coma to PTA can be joyful as well as painful for the family. For example, many survivors imagine that the doctors and nurses are guards, imprisoning them for bad behavior, such as swearing or striking visitors. This scenario will probably make little sense to you, but will temporarily satisfy your survivor’s unconscious need to find some logic behind her confusion. Seeking some explanation for their plight, they may mix imagination and memory to create a sometimes fantastic scenario. They are utterly confused by their situation. Others become psychotic, experiencing delirium and/or hallucinations. Some patients become aggressive and uncontrollable and must be medicated to calm down. She is unconsciously and frantically trying to sort through a lifetime of experiences and reconcile them with her current infant-like condition. She continually worried that I would return to work - leaving her alone, perplexed, and scared-despite frequent reminders that I was retired.ĭuring this period of disorientation, the patient can become extremely agitated and resist attempts to calm her. When Jessica became more lucid toward the end of her post-traumatic amnesia, she couldn’t recollect from day to day that I had stopped working eighteen months prior to her accident. This can be distressing to unrecognized and ignored family members. She may develop familial connections with her medical team as she tries to understand her environment. Or, she may not recognize family members or friends. A young adult, for example, may forget she finished college ten months before her injury. Your survivor may temporarily or permanently lose some memories from before her injury. She doesn’t need any additional frustration. Don’t ask her questions until you are certain she will be able to respond easily. She may ask, “Where have you been all day?” when you have left her bedside for just a moment.Īnswer her questions with simple words and short sentences. If she’s able to speak, she asks the same questions repeatedly because she can’t remember the answers. She goes robotically from place to place and from task to task as directed by her therapists. She doesn’t remember her daily activities. While in post-traumatic amnesia, the patient is somewhat responsive, but baffled by her surroundings. As the weeks of post-traumatic amnesia pass, the odds of a good recovery diminish. The duration of PTA is one of the better - but still not very reliable - predictors of long-term outcome (see page 101). Jessica’s coma lasted two to three weeks her PTA lasted more than ten weeks. In general, post-traumatic amnesia lasts three to four times longer than the preceding coma. It can be weeks or months before your survivor is able to routinely store new memories. Memory is the slowest part of the conscious mind to recover from an injury. She may be unable to recall very basic information, such as her name, your name, the season of the year, or the name of the current president. In this condition, the survivor may not understand who she is, where she is, and what is happening to her. More recently, the definition has been broadened to include a state of disorientation to time, place, and person. For years, PTA was defined as the period of time after an injury when the brain is unable to form continuous day-to-day memories. It is called post-traumatic amnesia (PTA). This is a normal part of the healing process. She may behave bizarrely or in a manner completely alien to her personality. She may be disinhibited, demonstrating a complete disregard for social conventions. She may be disoriented, agitated, angry, impulsive, or extremely emotional. When your survivor emerges from her coma, she likely will have little or no short-term memory. Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3. Free Printable Minion Pumpkin Carving Patterns for Parents At this stage, with the motor still running, you can start to add the oil in a thicker stream until it’s all gone. The sauce should now be quite stable and look just like a good quality mayonnaise. Toum (Arabic:, alat tm - garlic sauce), also called tum, toom, tummie or toumya, is a Lebanese paste made with garlic that is very popular in the Middle East and the entire Levant region. Again in a thin drizzle with the motor running, add oil until you’ve added about another cup, using a spatula, stir the sauce a little and push down any sauce from the sides of the processor. This helps enhance the flavour - it’s key to add at this early stage as it can potentially split the sauce if you wait until the end. You’re looking for a creamy consistency, with a little stiffness. After about 1/2 cup of oil has been added, the garlic and oil should come together to form the beginnings of the toum. Blend for about 2 minutes to mince the garlic. Place the garlic cloves in the bowl of the food processor and add the ice water. Make sure to remove all the germs since they would make the sauce bitter. This is the crucial step that you can’t rush. Peel the garlic cloves and cut them in half to remove the germ (the green sprout) in the middle. Arrange the skewers on the heated grill in one single layer. Thread the chicken pieces on to skewers, folding larger pieces in half as necessary. At this stage you need to add the oil in a very thin drizzle, with the motor running. Heat the grill to medium and lightly grease the grates. The salt acts as an abrasive, which helps break down the garlic. You need a smooth (or as smooth as you can get) garlic puree. You need to push it down into the processor a few times. Using a food processor (it’s the easiest way) puree a tonne of garlic with salt until smooth. The process for making the fluffy garlic sauce is easy, but requires a few steps to ensuring a good texture Packs and sleeves are good for standard book sizes, and the rolls are great for measuring and cutting your own book coverings. The WJ&S took over the property in the spring of 1900. The line went bankrupt and became the Delaware River Railroad in early 1879. Originally chartered as the Delaware Shore Railroad in February, 1873 it was completed between Woodbury and Penns Grove in July, 1876. The WJ&S was created in May, 1896 and was actually a conglomeration itself of smaller lines including: Camden & Atlantic RailroadĬhartered on Maby the state of New Jersey the C&A connected Camden with Atlantic City. The Pennsylvania Railroad's predecessors were collectively known as the West Jersey & Seashore Railroad. In the years prior to the Seashore Lines speeds were even higher 4-4-2 "Camelback" designs (or "Mother Hubbards" as they were sometimes known) of the Atlantic City Railroad zipped along at speeds eclipsing 100 mph.ĭuring one particular run on July 20, 1904, led by #1027 the locomotive set a speed record of 115 mph between Brigantine Junction and Egg Harbor City carrying a five-car consist. A case in point was the PRSL trains traveling the 58 miles from the nearly arrow-straight line linking Camden with Atlantic City regularly did so in just 52 minutes with a top speed of 80 mph. This was not the case prior to 1950 when railroads spent a great amount of effort and money providing the public with efficient, high-speed service. There are few places where one can still enjoy trains traveling near or above 100 mph today. The public has largely ignored trains in favor of cars and airliners. Today, the United States does not place the important emphasis on passenger rail travel it once did. Depending upon where the trains were headed they departed from different locations, including PRR's 30th Street and Broad Street Stations in Philadelphia. Listed below are principal Pennsylvania-Reading Seashore Lines services operating between Camden/Philadelphia and Atlantic City. In addition, the PRR and Central Railroad of New Jersey dispatched trains from the New York to Southern New Jersey the former from its main line at Trenton and the latter via its flagship Blue Comet connecting Jersey City with Atlantic City via PRSL's Winslow Junction. These trains handled more than 50,000 travelers each day (according to the article " Three Months Feast, Nine Months Famine," by Al Rung from the June, 1948 issue of Trains demand peaked at 100,000 daily riders during World War II). The ACRR property had been entirely double-tracked by 1889 as demand soared for those flocking to the beaches and escape the summer's heat.īy the 1940s the PRSL was operating 176 daily passenger trains during the summer season, 111 of which departed from either Philadelphia's Market Street Wharf or Broad Street Station bound for the New Jersey coastline. The first to offer service was the Camden & Atlantic in the 1850s, a precursor to the PRR's West Jersey & Seashore Railroad while the predecessors of Philadelphia & Reading's eventual Atlantic City Railroad began offering competition in the 1870s. The region exploded into a popular tourist destination following the Civil War. Finally, electrified service (all third-rail) extended from Camden to Bridgeton and as far as Millville via Newfield. Into the diesel era things were much more interesting as the road operated almost entirely rare Baldwin models like the S-12, AS-16, and DRS-4-4-1500. The Pennsy's motive power department was responsible for maintaining and supplying PRSL's locomotive fleet. The use of almost-entirely PRR-owned or handed-down equipment was a result of the previously-mentioned agreement. On occasion the road utilized a fleet of Pennsy' s hearty 4-6-2's (K-4s) and even a Reading 4-6-2 (Class G). Camden & Atlantic Railroad (March 19, 1852)Ĭamden - Haddonfield - Winslow - Richland - Tuckahoe - Cape MayĪll of the energized territory was the result of PRR's work on its line between Camden-Atlantic City and Woodbury-Millville while the Reading's operation was steam powered only.ĭuring the early 1940s PRSL's locomotive fleet consisted of ten 4-4-2 Atlantics (PRR Class E-6), twelve 2-8-0 Consolidations (PRR Class H), and five 0-6-0 switchers (PRR Class B).
